The Lofoten Islands are an archipelago of improbable drama — jagged peaks rising directly from the sea, red-painted rorbu fishermen's huts, surf breaks below cliffs, and a quality of light that photographers come from across the world to chase.
The islands are small enough to feel intimate but big enough for several days of exploration. Hiking from village to summit and back in a single day is standard, and the views from any high point are among the finest in northern Europe.
In winter, the midnight darkness makes Lofoten one of the best aurora locations in Norway. In summer, the midnight sun extends golden hours indefinitely. Both seasons have a different but equally compelling appeal.
