The briefing

Why this one

Mozambique has the Indian Ocean coastline that everyone in East Africa talks about but almost nobody reaches. The Bazaruto Archipelago has the last viable dugong population in the western Indian Ocean. The Quirimbas dhow route is one of the last places on the coast where the pace of travel is still determined by the wind.

Bazaruto's dugong-patrolled seagrass beds by snorkel, a dhow sailing trip between the Quirimbas islands with no fixed schedule, Pemba's coral reef for manta encounters in season, and a beach lodge on an island that has exactly the right number of rooms.

The rhythm

Morning snorkel on the seagrass; dhow afternoons between islands; reef dives at dusk; beach fire evenings with a fixed crew.

The energy

Remote, salt-bleached, and unhurried at a cellular level.

Medical evacuation from the Quirimbas is measured in hours, not minutes. Comprehensive travel insurance with air evacuation cover is non-negotiable. Malaria prophylaxis is essential throughout.
