Corsica, France

Corsica

Granite spires, maquis scrubland, and the hardest trail in Europe.

Corsica is a mountain range that happens to be an island — jagged granite peaks dropping to the Mediterranean, with 180 km of demanding trail threading the spine from north to south.

The GR20 is the headline but the whole island rewards the walker: chestnut forests in the interior, Genoese coastal towers, maquis-covered hillsides scented with rosemary and myrtle. The north is technical; the south is softer, with the Bavella needles as the climax.

Outside the trail the island offers a genuinely different France — Corsican culture, Corsican food, and a pace that is entirely its own. The coast is spectacular and accessible from any valley base. Come for the GR20, stay for everything else.
