Turquoise Coast, Turkey

Lycian ruins above turquoise coves on one of the world's great long walks.

Turkey's Lycian Way runs 540 km along the Mediterranean coastline — past ancient rock tombs, ruined theatres, hidden coves, and villages where goat bells are the main sound.

The scenery is theatrical. Clifftop paths pass Lycian tombs carved directly into the rock face, drop to secluded bays for swimming, and rise again to panoramas of the blue Aegean horizon. The combination of archaeology, trail, and sea access is nearly unique in long-distance walking.

The gulet boat alternative allows the coast to be experienced by sea instead — anchoring in the same coves but arriving by water. Many travelers combine a section of trail walking with a few nights on a gulet for the most complete version of the experience.
