Mozambique Bazaruto

Dugong waters, pristine reefs, and an Indian Ocean that feels genuinely untouched.

The Bazaruto Archipelago is one of the Indian Ocean's last great marine wilderness areas — five islands with protected coral reefs, the world's largest population of dugong, and dhow-sailing culture unchanged for centuries.

Conservation sits at the centre of the experience here. The lodges are small and deliberately limited in number; the reefs are in genuinely good health; the dugong are visible because they have been protected. It is one of the few places in Africa where the marine environment matches the terrestrial parks for sheer quality.

Combine Bazaruto with a night or two in Vilanculos on the mainland — the fishing village, the dhow market, and the laid-back Mozambican pace make an excellent landing and departure before and after the archipelago.
