The destination
Rajasthan is India at its most concentrated — three great desert cities strung together by long golden plains, each one a different shade of the same extraordinary story.
Jaisalmer's fort rises from the Thar Desert as if it grew there. The lanes inside the walls are still lived in, the jalis still catch the afternoon light, and a camel trek into the dunes at sunset is one of the most cinematic things you can do anywhere in Asia.
Jodhpur's blue city and Mehrangarh Fort above it, and Udaipur's Lake Pichola with the white palace floating on its surface, complete the arc. The circuit rewards slow travel — give each city a full day and a half, start early every morning, and leave the afternoons loose for the bazaars.
What works here
First India trip, Architecture and culture, Photography. Best seasons: October–March. Summer heat is dangerous; monsoon (July–September) restricts access.
