Sri Lanka packs the variety of a much larger country into a two-week circuit. The tea country train is the benchmark scenic railway of South Asia. Sigiriya is one of the ancient world's most extraordinary engineering achievements. The east coast is a genuinely different country from the heavily-visited west.
The Kandy-to-Ella train through mist-wrapped tea estates, Sigiriya's 5th-century rock fortress at dawn before the queues arrive, a wild elephant gathering at Minneriya, and the east coast at Arugam Bay - the bay that surf culture and leopard safaris somehow share the same road.
