Jordan is the Middle East's most rewarding single-country itinerary — compact enough to cover its greatest sites in a week, deep enough to fill a month. Petra, Wadi Rum, and Aqaba are three entirely different environments within a few hours' drive.
Petra is best understood as a city, not a monument. The Treasury is the headline but the High Place of Sacrifice, the Monastery at dusk, and the Roman street by torchlight on Treasury Night are all extraordinary in their own right. Give it two full days.
Wadi Rum — the valley of the moon — is a completely different landscape: red-sand desert punctuated by dramatic sandstone pillars that have served as Mars on film more than once. A Bedouin camp overnight inside the protected area, with no light pollution and a fire dinner, is the experience that stays with you longest.
